The Truth About Websites
Check the time. The average person will give your website between fifteen seconds and two minutes before they decide if their going to give you a chance or hit the back button on their browser. This time, obviously, is crucial to whether or not your website is successful. How do you keep them interested and engaged? If you’re thinking big blinking picture - you’re wrong.
- How good does your website look
To some extent what looks good is a matter of preference. I like well-defined, centered, clean designs, with long soft lines, and simple uncluttered content. Maybe you don’t, but if we were surfing the web together and we landed on a page that was so bright it gave you a headache, or so poorly laid out that you couldn’t tell where things began and where things ended, we both would know we had found something - not good.
- How well does your website work
If your page hasn’t finished loading within the fifteen seconds, your done for. This has to do with optimized graphics and optimized code. If, when it’s done loading, there are still obvious things missing, or if someone clicks on a link and gets a blank page, your done for. These have to do with upkeep and maintenance. If people can’t get to the information they want, they will leave. This has to do with website design, layout, and overall usability.
- What does you website say
The content of your website, what it says, is more important than anything else. In many ways your content defines how your website looks and works. More importantly the content is the reason people will come to your website at all, and it is the main reason they will stay.
